There was drama amidst races on the waters when last Wednesday, 5th December, the GGR or Golden Globe Race 2018 saw skipper Susie Goodall suffers a setback. She was sailing her modified boat Rustler 36 about 2000 miles off the west coast of Cape Horn. Being in the heavy seas her deck was stripped clean of the rig as well as she herself being left unconscious for some time in her cabin. The spinnaker poles, dual and the rigs were her plan B.

She was the sole skipper in the GGR race this year, being a female skipper, 29 years of age who resorted to using period-specific boats which included skegs and full keels of the ancient design as well as void of all kinds of modern telecommunication and navigation equipment. She hails from Falmouth UK and is the youngest competitor in this race. She was in 4th position when she met a ferocious storm with winds blowing at 60 knots.

For the first time, the Resolute Cup, which is a premier keelboat competition, is all set to expand way more than the boundaries of the United States this September. Besides, many Olympic sailors, there have been many one-design world champions produced by the Junior Sailing Program. Also, some of the college sailors are outstanding in their sailing skills. The sailors from different yacht clubs will compete with each other and this is the right forum where sailors can definitely test themselves.

 

The Resolute Cup has created its identity which is a class apart compared to other competitions. In 2010, it was known by the name Qualifying Series for Rolex. Now it’s being organized every year in Newport, RI at NYYC Harbour Court. The competition brings together many best amateur sailors across the United States and each of them represents their home yacht club. In 2018, there are 28 teams from 3 major coastlines of the United States. In addition to this, there are inland lakes which will join in September for one design race in the fleet of the same Sonar keelboats by the club. The winning team will definitely receive an invitation for the premier amateur big-boat competition.

The Round the Island race in the UK was currently in the news that was held in the Isle of Wight in Cowes. The race held on the first weekend of July this year comprised of four sessions held in a single day. The game had two halves and one could get their pick of everything. End of the day it was an exciting match to watch on Cloudy Bay at all levels.

The main headlines were gathered by Concise 10 as it not only finished first, with the crew fresh from a Yacht Charter in Greece, but also succeeded in breaking the time record set last year by Phaedo 3. The boat was skippered by Ned Collier Wakefield who, along with his crew, was able to steer their 70ft trimaran to the finishing line in record time, about a minute off the previous time record set. The spotlight also fell on JPK10.80 which was skippered by Adam Gosling. They were able to get the Gold Roman Bowl, which is usually preserved for the winner who completes the race as per the time schedule.
